Monrovia School Link ~ Number 148 ~ December 10, 2005

This is the meeting at which newly elected board members Chris Rich and Clarence Shaw take their seats on the board. As you know, I supported Rich but didn't support Shaw. Nevertheless, congratulations to both of you! And my sincere hope, Clarence, is that you show Monrovia what an idiot I was for not endorsing you. Well, you guys are jumping right into the fire: I notice one of the reports for the meeting is on declining enrollment.

It's kind of a complex meeting this Wednesday, Dec. 14. At 5 p.m. is a reception for retiring Board Members Bruce Carter, Monina Diaz and Betty Sandford. Then at 7 p.m. is the organizational meeting, where Carter and Diaz step down and Rich and Shaw step up, and the board figures out who serves as president, VP, and so forth. Then, at 7:30 p.m., they get down to business.

Here are a few items that struck me:

Item 7.8 - The board will receive a report on declining enrollment. I guess this is where reality strikes our new board members.

Item 9.3 - The board will receive for first reading on a board policy on steroids.

Item 9.4 - The board will "discuss advocacy priorities on behalf of Monrovia Unified School District and public schools across the state and nation."

Item 9.7 - The board will "nominate a board member or board members within Region 23A for California School Boards Association (CSBA) Delegate Assembly."

Ho, Ho, Ho ~ Also -'tis the season - the board will receive thousands of bucks and lots of other loot from local (and distant) individuals, businesses and organizations, including $5,000 from Monrovia Schools Foundation, $500 for MHS from the University of Akron (We have friends in Ohio!?), tire caps for unicycles (yup), uniforms for the Clifton football team, play scripts, a Chevy V8 engine, a 1988 Toyota pickup and a bunch of other goodies. Merry Christmas!
