III. The Letter and the Spirit

John 6:63 - The spirit gives life; the flesh profits nothing: the words I speak to you are spirit and life.

John 7:24 - Do not judge according to appearance, but judge righteously.

Matthew 15:10 - And he called the multitude, and said to them, Hear, and understand:

Matthew 15:11 - Not that which goes into the mouth defiles a man; but that which comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.

Matthew 15:16 - And Jesus said, Are you also still without understanding?

Matthew 15:17 - Do you not yet understand, that whatever enters in at the mouth goes into the belly, and is eliminated?

Matthew 15:18 - But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.

Matthew 15:19 - For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immorality, thefts, false witness, slanders:

Matthew 15:20 - These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.

Mark 7:14 - And when he had called all the people to him, he said to them, Listen to me, every one of you, and understand:

Mark 7:15 - There is nothing from outside of a man that can defile him by entering into him: but the things which come out of him, those are the things that defile the man.

Mark 7:18 - And he said to them, Are you also without understanding? Do you not perceive, that whatever enters into the man from without, it cannot defile him;

Mark 7:19 - Because it does not enter into his heart, but into the belly, and is eliminated? Thus he declared all foods clean.

Mark 7:20 - And he said, That which comes out of the man, that defiles the man.

Mark 7:21 - For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery,

Mark 7:22 - Covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lustfulness, envy, slander, pride, foolishness:

Mark 7:23 - All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

Mark 7:7 - In vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Mark 7:8 - Laying aside the commandment of God, you hold to the traditions of men.

Luke 11:39 - And the Lord said to him, Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.

Matthew 23:25 - Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and self-indulgence.

Matthew 23:26 - You blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.

Luke 11:40 - You fools, did not he who made the outside also make the inside?

Mark 7:9 - And he said to them, You fully reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your own tradition.

Mark 7:10 - For Moses said, Honour your father and your mother; and, Whoever curses father or mother, let him be put to death:

Mark 7:11 - But you say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, whatever I have that might benefit you is Corban, that is to say, a gift to God,

Mark 7:12 - Then you do not allow him to do anything for his father or his mother;

Mark 7:13 - Thus making the word of God invalid through your tradition, which you have handed down: and you do many such things.

Matthew 15:3 - But he answered and said to them, Why do you transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

Matthew 15:4 - For God commanded, saying, Honour your father and mother: and, He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.

Matthew 15:5 - But you say, Whoever shall say to his father or his mother, Whatever of mine might benefit you is a gift to God;

Matthew 15:6 - Then he is free not to honour his father or his mother. Thus have you made the commandment of God void by your tradition.

Matthew 23:16 - Woe to you, blind guides, who say, Whoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!

Matthew 23:17 - You blind fools: which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold?

Matthew 23:18 - And, Whoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is upon it, he is obligated.

Matthew 23:19 - You blind fools: which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift?

Matthew 23:20 - Therefore, whoever shall swear by the altar, swears by it, and by all things on it.

Matthew 23:21 - And whoever shall swear by the temple, swears by it, and by him who dwells in it.

Matthew 23:22 - And he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him who sits on it.

Matthew 23:23 - Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, justice, mercy, and faithfulness: these you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.

Matthew 23:24 - You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel.

Luke 11:42 - But woe to you, Pharisees! for you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, but neglect justice and the love of God: these you ought to have done, and not left the others undone.

Matthew 23:27 - Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you are like whitewashed tombs, which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but within are full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.

Luke 11:44 - Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you are like unmarked graves, which men walk over unaware.

Matthew 23:28 - Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but within you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

Matthew 15:7 - You hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,

Matthew 15:8 - This people honours me with their lips; but their hearts are far from me.

Mark 7:6 - He answered and said to them, Well has Isaiah prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honours me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
