Zeebrugge: The seaport of Bruges, Belgium, with which it is connected by a ship canal accommodating sea-going vessels. After its capture by the Germans in 1914 Zeebrugge was used as a base for submarine operations against Allied shipping. Dutch zee, "sea," and brugge, "bridge."
