Thebes: In Boeotia, the Greek Thebae, is now Pheba or Phiba. The site of the acropolis was a small hill, and we learn from Varro that teba meant a "hill." In the name of the Egyptian Thebes we have a Greek corruption of the popular Egyptian designation of the city, which was called t'ape, "the capital."
