Saint Marie, Sault, Michigan: The French call a cascade, says Schoolcraft, a leap or sault, but sault alone would not be distinctive; therefore, in conformity with their general usage, they added the name of a patron saint to the term by calling it Sault de Sainte Marie, that is, "Leap of St. Marie," to distinguish it from other leaps or saults.
