Saint Bernard, Great: An Alpine pass leading from Martigny, Valais, Switzerland, to Aosta; Italy, and connecting the valleys of the Rhone and the Dora Baltea. It was traversed by armies in Roman and medieval times. The passage by the French army under Napoleon in May, 1800, is especially noteworthy.
