Rangoon: The chief town and port of Burmah is called in Burmese Ran-kun, the "end of the war", literally, enmity exhausted. A name given in 1763, by Alompra, the founder of the Burmese dynasty, who, after the destruction of the city of Pegu, established the capital of the kingdom near the famous golden pagoda called Shwe Dagon, with which Ran-kun may probably be connected by assonance.
