Prince Edward Island: In the Gulf of St. Lawrence, was formerly called St. John's Island. In 1798, the local legislature passed an Act, confirmed in 1799 by the king in council, changing the name to Prince Edward Island, in compliment to Prince Edward, afterward Duke of Kent, and father of Queen Victoria, who was then commander of the forces in British North America.
