Philippines: Were discovered by Magellan on the Feast of St. Lazarus, 1521, and hence called by him Archipelago de San Lazaro, a name changed in 1542 to Islas Filipinas in honor of Philip II., in whose reign the Spanish colonization of the islands was begun.
