Oregon: State of the Union, and a county in Missouri. The name said to have been derived from Origanum, a species of wild sage found along the coast in the State, but another authority states that it is derived from the Spanish Oregones, which name was given the Indian tribes inhabiting that region, by a Jesuit priest, the word meaning "big-eared men."
