Newfoundland: The earliest of the colonial possessions of Great Britain. The name originally applied to the regions discovered by the two Cabots, and included a great portion of the North American coast. The island to which the name is now restricted is believed to have been the Island of St. John, so called because discovered by John Cabot on St. John's Day, June 24, 1497.
