Huron: One of the Great Lakes of North America. Opinions differ as to the classification of the name, whether French or Indian, and to its meaning. According to some authorities it is a corruption of the name "Hure," given a tribe of Indians by the French, the word meaning head of a wild boar," applicable on account of their unkempt appearance; another authority says it is derived from the Indian words Ohkwe honwe, "true man"; by others to have been corrupted by the French from the Indian Irri roron, "cat-tribe."
