Hudson River, New York: Named in honor of Henry Hudson, an English navigator in the Dutch service who ascended the river in 1607. He called it "the Great River," or "Great River of the Mountains," from the extraordinary circumstance of such a body of water flowing through the mountains without a cataract. The Dutch gave the name of Mauritus River in honor of Prince Maurice, to the section above New York Island.
