Hermitage, The: A palace at St. Petersburg Russia, founded by Catharine II., originally in the form of a pavilion of moderate size, but rebuilt in the Nineteenth Century in a neo-Greek style of excellent effect, and forming one of the best-designed museums existing. Also the name of the home of President Jackson, near Nashville, Tennessee.
