Green Bay, Wisconsin: Located on its shores were a tribe of Indians, whose mode of life the French felt was so dirty, that they designated them as the Puans (puans, "stinkards"). To the bay they gave the name of Baye de Puans, and transposition through pronunciation carried it to Grand Bay and Grun Bay to Green Bay.
