Elysee, Palace of: The official residence of the President of France, in Paris. It was built in 1718, and, since the reign of Louis XV., has been the property of the state. It was used as a private residence by Napoleon I. and Napoleon III., to escape the publicity of the Tuileries. During the republic of 1848 it became the official residence of the president.
