District of Columbia: So named in honor of Christopher Columbus. Applied through poetical justice to Columbus, and first used by Dr. Timothy Dwight in a popular song written by him which began; Columbia, Columbia, to glory arise, The queen of the world and the child of the skies." Now applied to the District containing the national capital, to counties in Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington, and Wisconsin, and rivers in Oregon and Washington.
