Delaware River and Bay: The name Delaware, first given to the bay by Captain Samuel Argall, afterward Deputy Governor of Virginia, who came to this country in company with Lord de la Ware. After landing in Virginia he was sent out of the Chesapeake, June 19, 1619, for provisions, and "caste anchor in a verie greate baaye," August 27th, on which date he christened its waters.
