Colosseum or Flavian Amphitheater: Probably so named from the colossal statue of Nero, which stood near it in the Via Sacra. An amphitheater in Rome begun by Vespasian (T. Flavius Sabinus) in 72 A.D., and for 400 years the seat of gladiatorial shows.
