Cheboygan: River, county, and city in Michigan. An Indian word, variously interpreted. Haines says it is composed of two words, che, "great," and poygan, "pipe." Another derivation gives the meaning, "the river that comes out of the ground." The Michigan Historical Society gave Chabwegan, "a place of ore."
