Catskill Mountains, New York: Name originally applied to the river by the Dutch, and transferred to the mountains, Katskill, "panther creek," from the numerous panthers or lynxes (cat-like animals) formerly inhabiting the hills. The mountains were called Katsbergs by the Dutch.
