Arkansas: River, State, county, and town in said State, and city in Cowley County, Kansas. Marquette and other French explorers wrote the word Alkansas and Akamsca, from the Indian tribe. The usual etymology derives the name from the French arc, "a bow," and Kansas, "smoky water," while another theory makes the prefix a Dakota word meaning "people"; hence, "people of the smoky water."
