Argonne, or Forest of Argonne: A rocky, wooded plateau in northeastern France, extending along the borders of Lorraine and Champagne, between the Meuse and Aisne, and forming a part of the departments of Ardennes, Meuse, and Marne. Forming a natural defensive barrier, it is famous as the scene of important military campaigns, notably in 1792, in 1870, and in both the First and Second World Wars.
