Andes: Properly "Cordilleras de los Andes," the "chain of the Andes," is a name of uncertain meaning. Garcilasso de la Vega says that it was derived from the Anti tribe near Cuzco. It has also been referred to a Peruvian word anta, "copper." Another proposed etymology is from anta, a "tapir," of which the Portuguese plural would be antas, so that the Cordilleras de los Antas would mean the "mountains of the tapirs."
