Amiens: A noted city of France. It is situated on the banks of the Somme, 80 miles northeast of Paris, occupying the site of the ancient Samarbriva, capital of the Ambiani, literally "dwellers by the water," from which it takes its name. Its world famous cathedral, built in the thirteenth century, the largest ecclesiastical structure in France, is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Europe.
