Agamemnon. King of Argos, in Greece, and commander-in-chief of the allied Greeks who went to the siege of Troy. Agamemnon married Clytemnestra, the daughter of Tyndareus, by whom he became the father of Iphianassa (Iphigenia). When Helen, the wife of Menelaus, was carried off by Paris, and the Greek chiefs resolved to recover her by force of arms, Agamemnon was chosen their commander-in-chief.
