Tyrtaeus
Tyrtaeus, the Spartan poet, is said to have been an Athenian by birth. He was a lyric poet of some talent, but it was the war-songs which inspired the Spartans in their Messenian wars which made his name famous. A few of these have been preserved. He was probably still alive in 668 B.C.
