Theobald

Theobald, LEWIS (circa 1688-1744), Shakespearean critic and dramatist, was born at Sittingborune in Kent. He incurred Pope's hatred by attacking his edition of Shakespeare, and was the original hero of the Dunciad (1728). His own edition of Shakespeare, a much more creditable performance than Pope's, was published in 1733.
