Suetonius

Suetonius (CAIUS SUETONIUS TRANQUILLUS), b. circa 70 A.D., Roman historian, grammarian, and critic, was the son of a military tribune, and started in life as an advocate at Rome. He was on intimate terms with the younger Pliny, whose letters to him are extant. Hadrian made him his private secretary (magister epistolarum), but he lost the appointment owing to his want of respect to the Empress Sabina. His only important work is the Vitae Duodecim Caesarum (Lives of the Twelve Caesars), which are valuable for their anecdotes illustrating the characters of the Emperors.
