Suakim
Suakim, a Nubian port, on the W. coast of the Red Sea, which has of late come into importance as being the base of British military operations in the Soudanese War. Part of the town is on the mainland, but the greater part is on a small island. It has a shallow harbour, and is well fortified. The chief buildings are the mosques, the residence of the Govrnor, custom-house, and bazaar. There is a trade in guns, hides, butter, cattle, ivory, ostrich feathers. The town is still held by a British force.
