Stanford, CHARLES VILLIERS (b. 1852), composer, is a native of Dublin, and was educated at Cambridge University, where he became organist of Trinity College in 1873 and conductor of its Musical Society in 1874, In 1887 he was appointed to the Professorship of Music at Cambridge. He has published much excellent music, among which may be noted his operas The Veiled Prophet (1881), The Canterbury Pilgrims (1884), and Shamus O'Brien (1896).
