St Michaels Mount
St. Michael's Mount, a pyramidal rock of granite in Mounts Bay, Cornwall, 3 miles E. of Penzance. It is connected with Marazion on the mainland by a causeway which is covered by the tide during 8 hours out of the 12. The castle on its summit (195 feet above the sands), which has belonged to the St. Aubyn family since 1660, occupies the site of a Benedictine priory founded by Edward the Confessor. The ancient portion comprises a hall, a refectory, a Perpendicul8.I chapel, and a tower, also Perpendicular, with a stone lantern at the SW. angle.
