Splint

Splint, a form of surgical appliance designed to keep a portion of the body in a fixed position. Splints are of special service in the case of fracture of a bone where it is necessary to preserve the proper aposition of the injured parts with a view to favouring the processes of repair, and securing the coalescence of the broken ends in such a position that no deformity shall result. Splints are usually made of pieces of padded wood, which are adjusted to the injured limb by strapping and bandaging. Plaster-of-Paris is largely used in the manufacture of splints, a bandage, into which the dry powder has been rubbed, being applied to the limb and moistened with water as it is adjusted, and every care being taken to preserve the parts in proper position until the plaster sets.
