Seleucia
Seleucia. (Greek Seleukeia), the name of several ancient towns which owed their origin to the Seleucidae. One of these, founded by Seleucus I. on the Tigris, became the capital of Syria, and attained great splendour, of which no trace remains but a few ruins near Bagdad. Seleucia Pieria, another city of the same date, stood near the mouth of the Orontes, and was the port of Antioch, forming a member of the Syrian Tetrapolis.
