Schliemann
Schliemann, HEINRICH, was born in 1822. Having inherited a fortune, he began in 1870 to carry out a long-cherished idea of exploring the sites memorable in Greek history. Beginning with Hissarlik, in the Troad, he extended his labours to Mycenae, Orchomenus, Tiryns, and Ithaca. The remarkable antiquities, so far as they could be removed, have been acquired by the British Museum and the Museum of Berlin. The Turkish Government, however, resented this alleged spoliation, and Schliemann was fined £2,000. He did not live to complete his undertakings, dying at, Naples in 1890.
