Sark
Sark, or SERCQ, a small island in the English Channel, six miles east of Guernsey, belonging to England. It was at various times a stronghold of pirates, and was occupied successively by French and English. In Elizabeth's reign Philip de Carteret, of St. Ouen, founded a colony and held the island as tenant of the British Crown. Since then it has several times changed hands, but remains a curious survival of a mediaeval Norman manor under its Seigneur. Mr. Swinburne and others have celebrated the coast scenery.
