Pyaemia_1

Pyaemia occurs in connection with various kinds of injury, particularly compound fracture of the long bones. It is met with after surgical operations, and as the result of certain conditions attended by inflammation, such as erysipelas, carbuncle, periostitis, etc. Puerperal fever is a form of pyaemia. The disease is often attended by the formation of secondary abscesses, and to those cases in which no such secondary pysemic formations occur the term septicaemia is sometimes applied. Cases of well-marked pyaemia frequently prove fatal; prompt surgical interference is sometimes, however, effectual in checking the progress of the malady.
