Purgatives

Purgatives are drugs employed with a view to producing increased intestinal action, whether it be by promoting excretion of the intestinal glands by the administration of salines or of cathartics (q.v.), or by increasing peristalsis by stimulating the nervo-muscular structures of the alimentary canal.
