Ptolemaic System

Ptolemaic System, so called from Ptolemy (q.v.), was the theory of the universe which obtained until the 16th century, when that of Copernicus took its place. The main idea was that the earth was stationary, and that all the heavenly bodies rotated round it in circles, and at a uniform rate.
