Proteusamphibian

Proteus (amphibian), a genus of tailed Amphibians, with persistent gills, from the subterranean waters of Carniola and Dalmatia. There are two or three species. Rudimentary lungs are present; theneyes are hidden in the skin, but the animals are sensitive to light.
