Plebiscite

Plebiscite, a word coined under the rule of Napoleon III. to denote the popular vote which confirmed him in the Empire and seemed at various times to show that his ascendency was popular with the nation. The name is taken from the Roman plebiscita, which were determined by the people voting by tribes and not by centuries.
