Pasde Calais
Pas de Calais, a department in the north of France, bordering on the Straits of Dover, which are so called by the French. The total area is 2,550 square miles, and the coast-line 80 miles long. Boulogne and Calais have good harbours. Fishing, turf-cutting, and mining are the chief industries; and in the towns are tanneries, iron-foundries, beet-factories, and glass-works. There aire many rivers and canals. Arras is the capital.
