Pare Ambrose
Pare, Ambrose (1509-90), the great French surgeon, was born at Laval. He rose from the humblest position to be surgeon-in-ordinary to four successive kings, and possessed in particular the confidence of Charles IX., by whom he was saved from sharing the fate of his coreligionists on the day of St. Bartholomew, 1572. To Pare's influence is ascribed even the cessation of the massacres.
