Nore
Nore, a sandbank in the estuary of the Thames, three miles N.E. of Sheerness. The name is also applied generally to the anchorage (7 to 10 fathoms), in the W. part of the estuary. The mutiny among the fleet at the Nore (1797) caused a temporary cessation of traffic, but was suppressed after lasting three weeks.
