Nollekens

Nollekens, Joseph (1737-1823), an English sculptor, was the son of a painter, and early in life was placed under Scheemakers, and in 1759' and 1760 gained premiums from the Society of Arts. He then went to Rome, where he executed busts of various distinguished Englishmen, and returned in 1770. His principal work is his Venus with the Sandal. During his ten years' stay in Rome he did a great deal of work in restoring old marbles to be sold as entire genuine antiques.
