Nodier

Nodier, Charles Emmanuel (1780-1844), an eminent French writer and bibliographer, born at Besancon; when ten years old he went to Strasburg, where he pursued his studies. In 1797 he became assistant-librarian at Besancon. At first he had a democratic tendency, but joined Royalist clubs and wrote against Bonaparte. Then in 1814, after several years' wandering, he went to Paris and contributed to various papers, and in 1820 made,. in the Nain Jaune, his celebrated attack on Napoleon. Louis XVIII. made him a noble, and gave him the cross of the Legion of Honour. In 1834 he became a member of the Academy, and died in 1844. He compiled several dictionaries, and wrote numerous memoirs.
