Narcotine

Narcotine, an alkaloid which occurs together with morphine (q.v.) in the seeds of Papaveraceae, i.e. the poppy group of plants. It is hence found in opium, from which source it may be extracted. It forms white, glistening crystals, which melt at 176°. Its constitution has been the subject of much recent chemical research, but as yet is hardly definitely established.
