Missolonghi
Missolonghi, a Greek seaport of modern origin, situated on a swampy plain in the nomarchy of AEtolia, 24 miles W. of Lepanto. It was twice besieged by the Turks in the course of the War of Independence. During that struggle Lord Byron (q.v.) died here of fever (1824).
