Margaretof Navarre
Margaret of Navarre (Marguerite d'Angouleme), sister of Francis I. of France, was born in 1492. She was married, first to Charles, Duc d'Alencon, in 1509; secondly, in 1527, to Henri d'Albret, King of Navarre. By the latter she had a daughter, Jeanne d'Albret, who became mother of Henri IV. Marguerite was a champion of Protestantism and a great patron of men of letters. She was the author of some interesting letters, of some poems, Les Marguerites tie la Marguerite, and the Heptameron is usually attributed to her. She died in 1549.
