Maranham
Maranham, or Maeanhao, the name of a maritime province and its capital in Brazil. The latter is situated on an island, and has a cathedral and bishop's palace built by the Jesuits. Cotton and sugar are exported, and manufactured goods taken in return, chiefly from Great Britain. Lord Cochrane, who captured the place in 1823, received the title of Marquis of Maranham.
